A piano teacher in Gilbert, Arizona, I have over 20 years of teaching experience. I specialize in beginner to late-intermediate levels, with individual weekly 30 minute lessons. I discovered that playing the piano was one of my great joys in life at a young age. I completed all 12 graded levels of the Arizona Study Program receiving outstanding performance and theory scores each year. In high school and college, I played keyboard and piano in multiple bands; including bands affiliated with Grand Canyon University. I was a lead pianist for my church for many years. As a piano instructor, my goal is to help students develop their own joy for the piano. Every student is unique, and I adjust my teaching methods to ensure to the best of my ability that I am educating each student in the most helpful way. I’m a New York Native who moved to the Valley of the Sun to study Music at Arizona State University. I am a traveling private piano teacher to students in the East Valley. I received my BM in piano performance at Arizona State University and have been teaching since 2014. Originally from northern New Jersey, I have recently relocated to Chandler, off of Riggs Road. I have taught students from 5 years old through adult age for 44 years. Education: Bachelor of Arts in Music from Montclair University, Master of Music from Rutgers University, additional piano pedagogy studies with Jane Carlson (Chairman of the Piano Department at the Juilliard Prep). My students have received top honors at the Music Educators Association - New Jersey Annual Piano Auditions. They have also been selected to perform on the MEA-NJ Honors Recitals. I have also served 5 years as a paid judge for the above mentioned auditions. My students have been selected to perform for the Juilliard School Piano Pedagogy Class in New York City. I have also had students win, through the Piano Teachers Society of America Piano Competition, the opportunity to perform at the Weill Recital Hall/Carnegie Hall. Along with teaching in my piano studio, I have taught for 34 years in public and private schools (keyboard class, general music, instrumental music, strings, chorus, band and jazz band). I currently am available to travel to your home for lessons (30, 45, 60 minutes). I have had the privilege of teaching for 17 years. My goal is to teach my students to learn to love music and the piano through a positive environment, fun pieces, consistency, and a foundation of knowledge they can use in many ways. While incorporating a base of some classical repertoire, students will also learn to play hymns, popular music and improvise from a lead sheet. They will be given the opportunity to choose the songs they learn. Along the way, I encourage proper technique as they learn scales, chords, and arpeggios. Students will also have regular theory assignments that will help with other music endeavors that may interest them in the future. Through hard work and dedication, they will develop a lifelong skill and the joy that comes from the love and appreciation of music.

 Arlene has performed at many events, from the Mohave Community College Anniversary Celebration, to performing for Mrs. Betty Ford in the White House. She has also been the lead organist and pianist at several churches including Lutheran, Catholic, American Baptist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, and Nazarene. Arlene has been contracted to perform at countless weddings, funerals, and special occasions. Current organist and pianist at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. I'm a proud native of Arizona. I attended Corona del Sol High School and Arizona State University where I met my husband, Justin. We have two amazing kids, Logan and Piper. We are very involved in the music program at our church, Dayspring United Methodist in Tempe. I have been a music educator in both Arizona charter and public schools for almost a decade. Graduating Summa Cum Laude in choral music education with an emphasis in piano from Arizona State University, I had the opportunity to study under the world-renowned pianists: Prof. Walter Cosand and Dr. Caio Pagano.  My piano career began at the age of 6 under the guidance of my late friend and mentor, Mrs. Edith Yarter. Ede, as we lovingly called her, quickly became a close friend of the family. She gave me the tools to not only read music, practice effectively, and perform, but also instilled a sense of confidence that carried me through many arduous years of practice and performance.  In middle and high school, I accompanied my school choirs as well as schools across the valley for both standard performances and competitions. The ability to accompany ignited a fire and passion for choral music. Working with great directors and choirs was a high point of my secondary and college career. 

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Carrie found a love for playing music at the age of two on her family's piano. She then began her studies through the public school strings program. Mrs. Caruso was awarded scholarships to attend Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for three years. Carrie received the National School Orchestra Award in 1989 for her outstanding performance, leadership, and contribution as Concert Master of the Walled Lake Western High School Orchestra, and nominee for the John Phillip Sousa National Band Award. She also participated in the Walled Lake Western High Symphonic Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Ensemble, performing on alto and baritone saxophone, as well as percussion, concert and show choir. Mrs. Caruso held the position as Drum Major in 1988-1989. Carrie began teaching privately in the Detroit area in 1988, then later relocated in Arizona in 1994, where she performed as a freelance violinist throughout the state. A former student of Dr. Frank Spinosa, Professor of Violin, Arizona State University, Carrie also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Ottawa University. She has performed with ensembles including, The Redford Symphony, Ferris State University Orchestra, Eastern Michigan University Honor Orchestra, Arizona State University Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Caruso co-founded the ensembles; Muse Violin & Cello Duo, Deux Femme, Auricle Guitar & violin duo, Epos, and Urban Quartet.  Carrie has shared stages with grammy nominee William Eaton and the William Eaton Ensemble, DJ Radar worlds top turntablist (Spin Magazine), Kurt Bestor, Donna Summer, John Fogerty, Seal and many more. Mrs. Caruso arranges repertoire and performs first violin for Urban Quartet, performing for distinguished audiences such as Lexus, Revlon, Redkin, Merryl Lynch, General Mills, NFL Team Owners, Liberty Mutual, and many others. The Urban Quartet commissioned, and performed the world premiere of a new work entitled, "STIFF" by Michael Schelle, composer-in-residence, Butler University. Carrie has recorded violin sessions for several artists and producers, as well as national commercial spots such as Arizona Music Project, commissioned by the Arizona Office of Tourism, Catholics Come Home (aired for President Barack Obama at the White House with Pope Benedict), Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), and Grand Canyon University. Mrs. Caruso performs with her modern violin crafted by Albert Topa, electric violin by Zeta, bow by Alex Hendruk. Mrs. Caruso takes part in the music ministry at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Tempe, Arizona and resides in Gilbert, Arizona with her husband and three children.

I have been a piano teacher for over 25 years! I earned my BA in Education from University of Arizona and Masters in Music History from Arizona State. My goal is to develop a life skill in piano and prepare my students to enjoy playing the piano their whole life long!

Born in Hong Kong, Dr. Mandarin G. Cheung-Yueh holds degrees in performance and pedagogy from Arizona State University and the University of Houston, as well as diplomas in piano performance from Trinity College of Music, London. She has won numerous piano competitions and performed with orchestras. She has served on selection committees for scholarships, research grants, as well as on governing boards of professional music organizations. An independent piano teacher for 35 years and a current board member of the Arizona Piano Institute, Dr. Cheung-Yueh has served on the piano faculty at Rosie’s House (2019), a community music school serving under-privileged pre-collegiate students in the Metropolitan-Phoenix area and has also taught high-school piano (2016-2018) and designed its curriculum for Arizona School for the Arts. Dr. Cheung-Yueh has written for Keyboard Companion (now Clavier Companion) and regularly adjudicates competitions, conducts master classes, and presents workshops at music teachers associations, including the Music Teachers National Association Convention. Her students have also won awards in various competitions and performed with orchestras. Dr. Cheung-Yueh was President (1991-1997) and co-founder of the Young Artist Committee, a non-profit organization which now, in partnership with ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, presents the biennial Bösendorfer and Yamaha USASU International Piano Competitions as well as The Angelo and Micheline Addona Arizona Young Artist Piano Competition.

I have experience teaching violinists from age 3 to age 80, teaching them how to hold the bow to preparing them for college auditions. I received my B.M. in Violin Performance from Utah State University where I studied with Rebecca McFaul and the Fry Street Quartet. I have eight years of teaching experience, including as adjunct faculty at USU. I studied Suzuki pedagogy with Cathy Lee and Allen Lieb. As a violinist, I have performed with the Utah Festival Opera, the Logan Quintet, East Valley Millenial Choir and Orchestra, and the American Festival Choir. I am passionate about teaching and the role of music in the world. Music can and should be fun as well as teaching you the vital skills of focus, resilience, and compassion.

“Mrs. Lyn” has been teaching music and movement to children since the early 1980’s directing youth choirs and musicals. She teaches music at the Sun Valley Learning Center in Tempe and is a licensedMusikgarten teacher/business owner (both since 1996). Growing up in a family and community that sang often, she was active in dance, band, New England District choirs, musicals, touring ensembles, and was an employed vocalist at a summer resort. As a nursing student at Boston College she toured with the BC Chorale, was a finalist in the 2000 NATS vocal competition, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree from ASU in Music Education and Childhood Development & Family Studies.  She completed her graduate studies in the music pedagogies of Kodály andOrff Schulwerk (certified through Level III in both), and completed the Level III certification for the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association. She is a current board member of the ECMMA, serving as the SW Regional Rep. as well as the Nominations Chair, and is the current president of the ECMMA of AZ Chapter, and a member of the Music Teacher's National Association. Mrs. Lyn’s teaching philosophy embraces facilitating experiences of joyful music making for children, teachers, and families. She endeavors to provide a comprehensive approach to music literacy by using materials and methods that are developmentally appropriate for the distinct needs of young children. This includes building musicianship through integrating the experiences of speech, singing, rhythm, movement, drama, and playing instruments. 

Patricia Cole is a professional classical violinist who has performed alongside famous artists including Andrea Bocelli, Michael Buble, Kanye West, and pianist Lang Lang. She is currently working on her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Violin Performance at Arizona State University.Ms. Cole welcomes students of all ages from beginners to advanced players and teaches a wide variety of genres including: Classical, Fiddle, Contemporary, and Mariachi music. For younger players she's an advocate of the Suzuki Method developed by Japanese violinist, Shinichi Suzuki and accepts students under the Suzuki method as early as age 4.For intermediate-advanced players, she works out of a variety of method books tailored to each student’s playing level within their desired music genre. I started teaching piano lessons when I was in high school, many years ago. I do not have a college degree in teaching or in music. I prefer to only teach children and young teens, only.

Born in the small town of Marion, Alabama, Mary moved to Birmingham at age 11 to attend the Alabama School of Fine Arts as a piano major. While living and studying at ASFA, she won awards in piano competitions from local to international levels – even going on to compete in the national round of the Music Teachers National Association Senior Duet Competition. At the age of 15, she debuted with orchestra, performing Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor. Mary completed her Bachelors of Music Degree in Piano Performance at the University of Houston under pedagogue, Nancy Weems. She then went on to complete her Masters and Doctorate of Music in Collaborative Piano at Arizona State University under the tutelage of Dr. Andrew Campbell. She held the position of Collaborative Piano Teaching Assistant for four years there. Mary has participated and performed in summer festivals such as Brevard Music Center, International Institute for Young Musicians, New Orleans Piano Institute, Eastern Music Festival, Texas Music Festival, and Fresh Inc Festival. Mary is a passionate teacher who champions the positive and far-reaching benefits music education has for all people, and places a special emphasis on collaborative piano. Her students have won highest honors in the Arizona Study Program Competition. She is an active performer and collaborator at ASU and in the greater Phoenix area, and is a regular commissioner of new works with the Rogue Trio – an innovative violin-saxophone-piano ensemble.

Kendra has been teaching music to all ages for the past twelve years in her own studio as well as in universities, arts academies, public and private schools, and summer camps. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2011 with a doctorate in Music Composition, and has had her original compositions performed by musicians in concerts and conferences around the world. Besides teaching, she has worked as pianist for ballet companies and as church pianist and keyboardist in both liturgical and contemporary services. Kendra enjoys guiding students on their musical journey using fun and creative lessons completely customized to the student's goals, learning style, and musical preferences. Whether she is helping high school students prepare to major in music, introducing the foundations of keyboard geography to a preschooler, or guiding young students in writing their first composition, Kendra is passionate about the joy of learning and providing a safe and encouraging environment for students to express themselves.

I've been teaching piano in Arizona for almost 10 years. I have a strong musical and performance background with a few years of music education in college under my belt. I focus on teaching technic, theory, and performance technic while growing my students interest in exploring different genres.

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Shalvi D’Arcangelo has been a pianist for over 20 years and a music educator, fostering innovation and creativity for levels K-12, university and adults. Shalvi holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Concentrations in Piano, Piano Pedagogy, and Special Music Education) from the Crane School of Music, State University of New York College at Potsdam and a Master of Music in Piano Pedagogy and Performance from the Glenn Korff School of Music, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In her free time Shalvi enjoys traveling, studying languages, reading, and continuing her personal research, which focuses on musical wellness and injury prevention for “small-handed” pianists.

I am a nationally certified teacher of music with Music Teachers National Association. I received a Bachelor of Instrumental music degree from ASU in 1971. My major instrument was piano. I have studied piano with master teachers such as Jane Tan, Francisco Aybar, Walter Cosand, Mary Pendleton, and Dan Hooper. I am a member of East Valley Music Teachers Association and Desert Vally Music Teachers Association. In addition to private lessons, I run a computer lab featuring software for ear training, theory concepts, and music history. The students have their private lesson and then afterwards, they go into the lab and do an assignment. I do one big studio recital a year in May, plus various activities sponsored by EVMTA. I have participated in the Arizona Study Program for many years. Currently I have around 12 students.

Linda has been providing quality piano instruction to the Northwest Valley for over 15 years. She is a member of several professional teaching organizations, including the following: Phoenix Music Teachers Association, Arizona State Music Teachers Association, and the Music Teachers National Association. Linda began her music performance career at the young age of 12. Her experience over the past 30 years has included playing for weddings, professional accompanying of vocalists, instrumentalists, and ensembles, as well as accompanying church choirs and playing for church services. Linda's teaching philosophy is that every student should learn to play to whatever capacity he or she is able and should have fun doing it! Linda strives to make this a positive learning experience and therefore will tailor her teaching method to best suit the needs of each student. 

Growing up in B.C. Canada, I realized my musical goals through numerous competitions and was able to study and receive my Piano Teaching Degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Since then I've been teaching private and group lessons for over 25 years. During this time I have taught many successful students who have pursued their musical education in colleges around the United States. Teaching beginners through advanced students, prepping for exams and competitions, along with many recital performances, has brought me much joy over the years. Spending time playing the keyboard in a band has brought another level of knowledge to my studio. Improvising, adding in voice, recordings and electrical elements, have added a more diverse understanding of our modern day music. Eileen has been sharing her love for music with students for the past 25 years. Weekly hour-length lessons are offered for all levels, ages 6 to adult. In addition to the private lesson, students work on music theory, ear-training, sight-reading, and music composition in the computer/keyboard lab. Monthly group classes are also offered, to give students confidence in performing. Students have the opportunity to gain performance experience by participating in PMTA events such as Fall Festival, Music at the Mall, Piano Ensemble, and the Student Recital Series. Mrs. Evans holds a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance/Pedagogy from Brigham Young University, and is a member of MTNA, ASMTA, and PMTA. She also recently earned her certification as a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music from the Music Teacher’s National Association. Mrs. Evans also has experience accompanying instrumentals, soloists, church and community choirs. Dr. Nadia Feeken is an accomplished performer and an exceptional teacher. A native of Tianjin China, Nadia began her piano study at the age of five and attended the Tianjin Conservatory of Music when she was twelve. She came to the United States in 2000 to continue her music education. After receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Piano Performance, she received her Doctorate degree of Musical Arts in piano performance in 2012 from Arizona State University. Nadia came to Arizona in 2006 when she was awarded a class piano teaching assistantship, Special Talent Award, as well as the Jean Wong Award. An active performer, Nadia has had solo performances in many cities in China and the United States, as well as Australia. In 2001, she performed in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. She also enjoys collaborating with other musicians and exploring varieties of ensembles and new music. Aside from performing, Nadia thoroughly enjoys teaching piano. She has been a private piano teacher for over ten years. She is able to connect with each student, help them open up their imagination and define their musical expressions. Her students have received the highest rating in Arizona Study Program. Her advanced students have won national competitions and have been accepted to the music program at ASU.

Kalynn Fleischman is a piano teacher and composer with over seven years’ experience composing music and over a decade studying piano. He has participated in numerous composition competitions and his works have been performed in both Europe and the United States. He has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from Grand Canyon University (GCU). He studied under Dr. Mark Broder (Music Theory) and Dr. Jelena Vladikovic (Piano Performance and Piano Pedagogy) while pursuing his undergraduate degree. At GCU he studied Music Theory I-IV, Counterpoint, Orchestration & Arranging, Private Piano, Piano Pedagogy, and various other music courses. For one and a half years he taught music theory at the University level as a GCU Learning Advocate (LEAD). He has experience with music education, digital music production, MIDI keyboards, recording, video game composition, as well as composition for various styles, genres, and ensembles. As a piano pedagogue, his primary goal is to train students Classically and to grow their overall understanding of music. Unlike many instructors, his approach is to teach students how to practice, why different pieces are performed with certain nuances, and how to approach all the different building blocks that go into each piece. He recognizes that musical education is proven to improve almost all other areas of education and significantly boosts each students’ development. He helps students form a solid understanding of music rather than have them just learn how to read and play notes. He teaches through asking questions which causes students to form conclusions on their own. Students then develop better problem solving skills, creativity, and musical expressivity.

Catherine Fletcher holds the Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees in piano performance. She has taught piano and music theory at the college level as well as to children of all ages and skill levels. Ms. Fletcher is currently accepting students in her Ahwatukee family-owned piano studio.

Hi, my name is Julie Follett and I love teaching piano to students of all ages! The following year, she presented an interest session on the topic at the Western Division ACDA Conference. ​ Erica holds a BM and MM in Music Theory and Composition, as well as an Ed.M. in The Arts in Education from Harvard, where she studied conducting with Dr. Andrew Clark, sang professionally with the world-renowned Harvard University Choir, conducted empirical research under Dr. Howard Gardner, presented at the Harvard Arts in Education Conference ("Bringing Classical Music from Background to Foreground"), became a semi-finalist in the Havard BRIDGE Educational Enterprise competition, and interned at the American Repertory Theatre. As a composer, arranger, and playwright, Erica has worked with Charles Strouse (composer of Annie, Bye-Bye Birdie), Richard Maltby (writer of Miss Saigon, Miss Potter), Jason Robert Brown (composer of The Last 5 Years, Songs for a New World), and the music directors of several Broadway shows (Newsies, Wicked, Cinderella, Annie, Lion King). Kevin Gorman holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University and a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Northwestern University. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts degree in music history and literature and a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance from ASU, where he has also served as a faculty associate in saxophone and chamber music. His teachers include Joseph Wytko, Frederick Hemke, Eugene Rousseau, Donald Sinta, and George Wolfe. A repeated winner in the prestigious Monterey Bay and Coleman chamber music competitions, Dr. Gorman has performed as orchestral saxophonist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, the Sun City Symphony, the Mesa Symphony, the Sierra Vista Symphony, the ASU Symphony Orchestra, the Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, and the West Valley Symphony, in addition to guest soloist appearances with the Sonoran Desert Chorale and the Sierra Winds Woodwind Quintet. McKell was raised in Idaho. She started playing piano at 6 years old. She then began playing violin and joined orchestra in middle school. During high school she began to teach piano and violin students. While she was in college she joined the choirs and orchestra. 2020, she graduated college and started taking on piano and violin students. She has had many wonderful students the past couple years in Arizona. She has enjoyed the opportunity to share her love of music with others and loved owning a music business.  She has studied with Andy O’Brien and Radmila Stojanovic. She is currently studying with local teachers Erin Conrad (violin) and Julie Briggs (piano). She recently learned cello and viola so now she is teaching 4 instruments. She often volunteers her time helping with music in her church. She is currently the social media manager for Perseus Learning Center for Individuals with Autism. As a Chief Instructor for Elements Music LLC, I taught both group classes on keyboards and private piano lessons beginning in 2003 (16yrs.). With Elements, I was responsible for creating beginner-intermediate arrangements of top 40 hits as well as the most popular Movie, Video Game, and TV Themes of the day. To promote our unique sticker method as well as music education, I performed over 100 demonstrations at school assemblies around the school districts in the valley annually for many years. I now teach privately full-time both in group lessons and private. In 2005, I graduated the ASU Barrett Honors College Summa Cum Laude. My primary instructor since 2000 has been master pianist Larry Clapp, who sadly passed away in November 2017. He was always the great inspiration in my choosing to pursue a career in piano. I have been a member of the MTNA EVMTA and PMTA for 10 years and consistently enroll students in the ASP state exams. This year, 3 of my students passed the most advanced L12 (High School Senior) level proficiency. I hold 2 annual recitals and regularly participate in MTNA events. Under Radmila Stojanovic Kiriluk and Ruth Yandell, I acquired both my of my CCL certifications in Beginner and Intermediate Piano Pedagogy at MCC and continue to maintain a consistent studio of 20-30 students. Marcia Havlovic received her Bachelors Degree in Education with a major in Music from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, MI and began working on her Masters in Music Education from ASU. Mrs. Havlovic has been teaching piano lessons for over 25 years, as well as being a music educator for over 15 years. She was the choral, instrumental and general music teacher at Phoenix Christian School K-8 for 5 years, a middle school Band director in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL for 4 years and has continued to teach piano privately as well. Now, a full-time piano instructor with a studio in the Marbella Vineyards, Mrs. Havlovic loves being involved in many of the events of the East Valley Music Teachers Association with her students. Mrs. Havlovic is also very proficient in all woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments and offers private lesson on those instruments for beginning/intermediate band students.

Jessica holds a bachelors degree in Piano Performance from Northern Arizona University. She has a deep love for music and a passion for teaching. Joshua Hillmann has entertained audiences for years as both a solo and collaborative artist with his energetic and colorful musical interpretations and outstanding technical ability. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Piano at Grand Canyon University, and a candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in piano performance at Arizona State University, studying with Dr. Baruch Meir, with whom he also earned his Master of Music Degree. He earned his Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at ASU, also with Dr. Meir. He has appeared as bass soloist with the Phoenix Symphony with Michael Christie conducting the opera in concert "Ainadamar". He has appeared with professional choirs around the country including the Grammy-winning Phoenix Chorale, Grammy-winning Kansas City Chorale, Grammy-nominated Seraphic Fire, Grammy-nominated Tucson Chamber Artists, and Spire Chamber Ensemble, and has shared the stage with such great artists as Kitty Carlisle, Dawn Upshaw, and Kelley O'Connor. I graduated from the Arizona State University School of Music with a degree in Music Therapy in 2010. I have been playing the piano for 25 years and I have been teaching for 12 years. My performances have included solos, duets, quartets, and accompanying small and large ensembles. My studio accepts individuals of all ages, abilities and levels. Because I have a background in Music Therapy, I am able to assess, adapt, and make each lesson tailored to the individual and their learning style.  I use a wide variety of percussion instruments as well as boards, charts, and keyboards to implement what is being taught. Dalene Husky has been teaching music since 1984. She has taught piano, voice, beginning guitar, choir at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as elementary general music. In her private studio, Ms. Husky has taught students from ages 4 to 88! Her bachelor’s degree came from the University of Texas at Tyler. She received a masters degree in music education from Texas Tech University. Ms. Husky is also a Kodaly certified teacher. I am classically trained and an experienced teacher, having taught piano lessons full time since 2005, first at Brindley's Music Center for 10 years and currently teach at the new San Marcos Music Academy in Chandler. Before teaching full time, I taught part-time for over 20 years. I hold two piano recitals per year at My First Piano in Mesa. I teach traditional note reading methods, exposing students to classical standards, jazz and blues, gospel & spiritual, favorites, popular, folk music, TV and movie themed music etc. I am very patient and a gentle in my teaching manner, but maintain a standard of high commitment with my students where they know they must practice daily in order to learn and to advance. I also reward my students for each 100 hours of practice as well as memorized pieces that I record weekly. Most of my students stay with me beyond 5 years and several of my students have committed in applying for music scholarships for college. I am also a substitute organist for my church and occasionally play piano solos during the year for church services.

Music has always been a huge part of my life! From the time I was very little, I had a knack for music that led to me starting piano lessons at age 4 and joining children's choirs at age 8. I took voice and piano lessons throughout my teenage years and was in every choir and musical I could be in high school. From there, I studied music at Brigham Young University through the Humanities program (long story). In 2008 I got married, moved to WA state, and we started a family. I started teaching piano shortly after my first child came in 2009 and have been teaching ever since!

I am a skilled private voice, piano, and french horn teacher. I graduate from ASU in Music Education with an emphasis on voice, with french horn as my second instrument. I am also an accomplished pianist, having taken lessons for 10 years and have taught for 13 years.  The progression found in my students is dramatic from one recital to the next.  Skill, musicianship, theory, sight-reading, and technique are all elements found in her private studio lessons.  Besides teaching, I sing professionally with her two sisters in a group called The Kidmans. We have 3 albums recorded that can be found at www.thekidmans.com and cdbaby.com. I also taught choir at Gilbert High School for 5 years before deciding to teach private lessons full time. I currently plays the French Horn for the EVMCO orchestra.Private lessons are taught out of my home with the choice of 30 minutes or 1 hour lessons. Lessons are weekly with recitals 3 times a year to give performing and stage skills to all musictians.  Recitals are just as educational and important for a musician as the music lessons themselves are. My students range in age from 6 yrs. thru adult.

I have been practicing music therapy, performance, and/or teaching professionally since 2008.  My private lessons studio, JJO Music, has been in business since October 2010.  We have had several recitals at My First Piano since I discovered them in 2011. I am a young, fun, and energetic teacher who can help people of all ages develop the skills they need and get excited about playing and singing music they love. Currently, I am providing virtual lessons over Zoom, and I can see students in my studio in person at Strum University in North Phoenix. I do not drive to students' homes currently because of safety during the pandemic. When I turned seven years old, my siblings and I were introduced to our piano teacher.  We did not want to learn piano.  Our parents insisted, so we took years of piano lessons.  These lessons led us to other instruments and other arts.  I started teaching when I was 14, and I found I loved to teach.  I made a better teacher than student!  I began to study and perform more intently.  I majored in Communication Arts at Loyola Marymount University.  I earned my certification as a piano teacher in California, and consequently became a full member of the California Music Teachers Association.  I moved to Arizona in 2000 where I joined the East Valley Music Teachers Association.  I have taught groups, semi private, and private lessons.  I teach all levels and all ages.  Since I have three boys with autism, several of my piano students have special needs.  My goal for my students is to love music, no matter their level of mastery.

Stephanie Jones is a graduate of Northern Arizona University where she earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. She was the student of Dr. Frank Scott and studied Suzuki Pedagogy under her mentor teacher Diana Galindo. Ms. Jones has taught students of all ages using both Suzuki and traditional methods. She has experience as both a private and group lesson piano teacher. Ms. Jones currently resides in Gilbert, Arizona where she currently nurtures a successful private studio. Ms. Jones encourages her students to take advantage of performance opportunities. Her studio holds regular recitals and Ms. Jones encourages her students to be active participants of the Arizona Study Program.

My favorite thing about teaching is connecting with each student to discover how their individual brain receives, processes and applies information. I began teaching private viola lessons over 30 years ago while still in high school. I went on to major in music ed for 2.5 years before changing my course of study and earning a BAE in Elementary Education with a fine arts emphasis. Over the years, I taught in many different settings, different ages and different levels. I currently offer private piano lessons primarily online with an option to come in-person periodically when needed. Most of my students are from the homeschool community and most of my lessons are scheduled between the hours of 10-2. I have been involved with homeschooling since 1991 when I started homeschooling as a High School Sophomore. I then helped school my 10 siblings. My 2 daughters have been exclusively schooled at home. One daughter is graduated and the other is finishing high school and pursuing a career in music performance. We are a neurodiverse family with both ADHD and ASD diagnoses. I am very familiar with neurodiversity and enjoy working with students, diagnosed or not, with ASD and ADHD symptoms. I know from experience that parents are the most valuable source of information for a teacher. My focus is always to support the goals of the parents while adjusting to the needs of the students. Tabitha is a classically trained pianist who has been teaching privately in the valley for over 20 years. She founded East Valley School of Music in 2006 and co-owned the school until 2021. She currently runs her own private piano studio, Desert Moon Piano Studio, in Chandler. She specializes in young beginners, advanced classical training, and working with students with special needs. Pianist Soo Yoen Kim enjoys a diverse career as a soloist, chamber musician, accompanist, orchestral player, and music educator. She has performed recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall in New York and Centennial Hall in Tucson. She was one of the soloists of the Chopin 200th Anniversary Gala Concert at the World Financial Center, New York, and the opening concert at the Lucca Music Festival in Italy. She won the First Prize in the American Protégé International Piano Competition 2014 at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2012, her performance at the International Bösendorfer Piano Competition was broadcast live on NPR Arizona Public Media. She is the Second Prize Winner of the Louis Trester Competition 2013, Arizona, and the winner of the Duquesne’s Concerto Competition 2011. Before coming to the United States, she was the First Prize winner at the Korean Youth Piano Competitions. Soo Yoen received a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Yonsei University, Korea, a Master’s degree in Music from the Mannes School of Music, the New School, New York, and an Artist Diploma from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. Soo Yoen is currently finishing a doctoral degree at the University of Arizona. She worked as a teaching assistant at Duquesne University and the University of Arizona, and as an accompanist for the University of Arizona Opera Production, and Arizona Choir. She was invited to and participated in masterclasses given by world-class pianists such as Richard Goode, Murray Perahia, Oxana Yablonskaya, and Stephen Kovacevich.

Miss Lawlor studied viola under Jacquelyn Schwandt at NAU where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. While attending NAU, she was an active member in the NAU Symphonic and Chamber Orchestras. Miss Lawlor also participated in the Suzuki training program at NAU. In her youth, she was a member of many orchestral groups including, the Arizona Youth Symphony, the East Valley Youth Symphony, and the Mesa Community College Community Orchestra. She also studied piano for 13 years under the instruction of Franchesca Retford. Before attending NAU, she was an assistant Suzuki strings instructor with Kevin Huang, a professional violinist from Julliard, and she volunteered at Blackbird Music Studio teaching a Suzuki violin class on Saturday mornings. Before joining the Chandler Unified School District, Miss Lawlor was an orchestra director at Queen Creek Middle School and Gateway Preparatory Academy. Miss Lawlor has been teaching orchestra at Willis Junior High School since 2017.

Mengyu Liu began her music journey at the age of 5, she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at Arizona State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance. Mengyu enjoys her career as a classical pianist, chamber musician, church pianist and educator now. Mengyu recognized her interest in teaching in 2016 while she volunteered to teach in a summer music festival for a high school in China, She also directed one piano lesson in Desert Marigold School in the same year. Then she attended the piano pedagogy studies focused on an intermediate level and successfully finished with a master class given at ASU Organ Hall. Mengyu recognizes the personalities of each student and encourages them to learn from their learning styles. She customizes each lesson from students’ goals of learning piano, gets them well-rounded musicianship from playing, ear-training, and their own tastes in music.

Alexa has been learning piano for over a decade and she has been teaching for four years! Alexa's piano playing has been judged at Guild in 2018 and she received the highest score of a "Superior Plus"! Madison teaches her students through positive reinforcement by giving certificates, stickers, ribbons, and trophies for earning enough points. Richard earned his Bachelor's degree in Music Education from New Jersey City University. He has been teaching piano and violin for over 30 years.       Sherin Moustafa is a multifaceted and accomplished pianist and instructor based out of the Phoenix metro area. Born in Egypt with Taiwanese heritage, Sherin speaks fluent Chinese and English, and is competent in Japanese, Arabic, German, Italian, and French. Her cultural background allows her to develop a worldview and an appreciation for both western and eastern music. Not surprisingly, Sherin fell in love with music at a young age because it has both the creative and serene elements that she saw in herself. Sherin is the co-owner of Music Lessons Arizona in South Tempe, offering private piano instructions, group instructions and instrumental/vocal collaboration. She has a master’s degree in Collaborative Piano Performance and a bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy from Arizona State University. Sherin serves as an adjunct faculty at Central Arizona College, where she creates lesson plans for adult group piano classes and private piano instructions for both non-music and music majors. Sherin also serves as the organist at Chandler United Methodist Church. She is a versatile pianist specializing in classical, music theatre, contemporary and other popular genres, and is often invited to perform at special events because of her ability to provide a captivating performance. Her passion for music and vibrant personality not only make her a mesmerizing performer, but also an effective piano teacher. Sherin has received awards from piano competitions and was a recipient of the Neely Music Talent Scholarship. She was also the keyboardist of 2015 Zoni award winning cast of Dreamgirls. Sherin has performed on numerous occasions at ASU's Katzin Concert Hall, Organ Hall, Recital Hall, Gammage and Kerr Cultural Center, Chandler Center for the Arts and Mesa Arts Center both as a soloist, and a collaborative pianist. Sherin served as an adjunct faculty and collaborative pianist at Mesa Community College and collaborative pianist/co-director at Perry High School. With Sherin's assistance, Perry High School concert choir achieved the Superior Award at the 2011 Heritage Festival. As a result, the choir was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City in March of 2012. Under Sherin’s tutelage, more than 96% of her piano students have been awarded superior honors through the Arizona Study Program, and selected students have won local piano competitions. Sherin is a proud member of East Valley Music Teacher Association (EVMTA), Arizona State Music Teacher Association (ASMTA) and Music Teacher National Association (MTNA). She is currently the Vice President of EVMTA, and the chair of the Composers Celebration Concert, a fundraising event for EVMTA in which students perform for the open public. Ken Noble has taught private piano, organ and keyboard lessons for 35 years in the Mesa area and loves to teach.  He has recitals 4 times a year and encourages his students to participate in the annual Piano Ensemble in Mesa and Arizona Study Program evaluations at ASU in May.  He has substitute taught music K-12 in Mesa Public Schools since 1998.  He attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education in 1970, and a Master of Music Degree in organ performance in 1972.  He studied organ with Dr. J. J. Keeler at BYU.  He also received a piano teaching certificate from the National Piano foundation after completing a course on how to teach the Robert Pace piano method in 1977.  he is an active member of the EVMTA (East Valley Music Teachers Association) and served as president from 1986-88.  He has performed and accompanied in countless concerts in the Phoenix metro area since 1976.  He has served as organist for Mesa First Christian Church since 1986 and is a member of the local American Guild of Organists.  In 1973-75 he served in the military as pianist and administrative officer for the 7th Army Soldiers Chorus stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, which traveled and performed extensively thruout Europe.  He and his wife Janice have 6 children and reside in Mesa. 

Dr. Janet Norman, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University in 2009.  She received her Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University and Bowling Green State University in Ohio and her Bachelor of Music degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, OH.  She has actively participated in and directed professional piano pedagogy events, master classes and conferences, including chairing the Arizona State Music Teachers Association conference in June of 2004 and 2007.  She currently teaches theory, piano class and applied piano at Grand Canyon University.  Norman also teaches private lessons at Scottsdale Community College. Her performances include solo recitals in Italy, New York, Ohio, and Arizona.Honors for her performances include third place in the Klatzkin Piano Competition, the 1999 inaugural ASU Contemporary Music Society Competition for performers, a two-time winner of the Three Arts Club of Lakewood, OH in 1987 and 1988, and the 1986 Baldwin-Wallace College/Conservatory Concerto Competition. She is also a nationally certified member of MTNA(Music Teachers National Association).

I majored in piano performance in college and have been teaching for 20 years to children and adults of all ages and abilities. I have and continue to perform and accompany all over the Valley for churches, high school and collegiate choirs, the Phoenix Girls Chorus, and more. It gives me great satisfaction to watch my students progress and grow in their musical journeys. Music is my passion and I enjoy passing on my love of music to the next generation.

Prior to relocating to Arizona in 2000, Andrew was on staff at St. Paul’s School and Concord Community Music School, both in New Hampshire, where he taught piano for 12 years. He is a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Canada. Andrew O’Brien is on the faculty of Scottsdale Community College, where he teaches piano and music history. He also teaches piano at Mesa Community College. He performs in the Chaparral Music Fest in Prescott, AZ. He is a founding member of the Seventh Roadrunner Ensemble. Andrew has appeared in recital at Boston College, Dartmouth College, University of New Hampshire and as soloist with the Nashua (NH), North Valley and San Tan (AZ) Chamber Orchestras, and with the Scottsdale Concert Band. Andrew received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance at Arizona State University where he studied with Robert Hamilton. He began piano study in the Chicago area at age seven, taking lessons from Nancy Burghardt and Amo Cappelli. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University where he studied with Robert McDowell and Pawel Checinski. Andrew received a Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, studying piano with Gabriel Chodos and chamber music with Benjamin Zander. This is my 18th year at Zaharis Elementary teaching band, general music and after school choir. I have also taught private flute lessons since 2003 while I earned an undergraduate at Arizona State University in Music Education and a Master’s in Flute Performance Pedagogy. I formerly studied under Christina Steffen and Dr. Elizabeth Buck and am adjunct faculty with Mesa Community College’s flute choir while also performing with Desert Echoes Flute Project. I also adjudicate, coach, and am a clinician around the valley with many organizations such as the Summer Flute Project, the Arizona Flute Society, and Rosie’s House.

Deborah has served as the Ritz-Carlton Music Director in Phoenix, as well as having played at Ritz-Carltons and Hyatt-Regencies elsewhere in America. Besides entertaining wonderful audiences in private gatherings, she has also played for touring Broadway shows such as “Mama Mia”, “The Producers” and “Hairspray”. Her biggest audiences, ranging from 7,000 to 12,000 people, have come when she backed The Irish Tenors at Dodge Theatre, on their national tour, as well as the rock group The Moody Blues at America West Arena. Any “Phantom of the Opera” fans? Deborah has also worked with Michael Crawford, the original Broadway “Phantom” . Recently, she was on stage with Michael Feinstein and The Phoenix Symphony, to two sold-out concerts! Deborah’s music has been heard on the radio in 14 European countries and is currently receiving airplay here in America. Along with performing, Deborah enjoys teaching the art of piano playing to all ages. The joy of music is within reach of everyone, no matter what age group or talent level!

He is currently working on a project for scratch DJ and 2 pianos called “Reveling in Ravel.” As an instrumentalist, Jeff has played clarinet since 1993 and piano/organ since 1999. The other woodwinds are strong secondary instruments and he plays different wind instruments in the AZ Wind Symphony for each concert. His students’ ages range from 4 to 65+ and he teaches all styles of music following a humanistic approach. Students learn music how they want to learn, the way they learn best, while playing music that interests them. Jeff encourages higher level thinking skills and creativity in lessons. He identifies talent, skills, and works to sharpen or add more skills in reading, improvising, spelling chords, technique, musicality, reading from a fake book, accompanying, ear training, and even writing your own music. Since Jeff served as a teaching assistant at ASU for 4 years he can easily prepare high school students interested in pursuing music in college.

I have been teaching piano for fifteen years, and live in the southeast Mesa area. I have been playing piano since the age of 8 for my personal enjoyment, and have accompanied soloists and choirs for many years. I began teaching piano after high school, took a break after I was married and had small children, then resumed teaching in 2010. I have been a member of Desert Valley Music Teachers Association (DVMTA) since 2007 which has given me opportunities for learning through monthly workshops and collaborating with other wonderful teachers, and gives my students the opportunity to participate in community events.

A Mason & Hamlin Concert Artist, he has garnered prizes on the national and international level, and has been heard on national radio. Pettersson has collaborated with numerous artists, including violinists Krzysztof Zimowski, David Felberg, and Guillaume Tardif, violist Henk Guittart, Cantor Josh Perlman, and tenor Michiel Schrey. In 2008, Pettersson formed Duo Giocoso with French violinist Roland Arnassalon; in 2017, he formed Æterna Sirius with pianist Jessica Yam. Pettersson also champions contemporary composers such as Alan Belkin, Baptiste Cathelin, Alvin Curran, Drea Pressley Tischhauser, and Altin Volaj. Pettersson premiered Petroglyph for Piano (2011) by New Mexican composer Michael Mauldin, and performed in a recording of Gabriel Madden’s La Herse (2009), featuring a rare Sauter 1/16-microtonal piano. A frequent performer, lecturer, and masterclass teacher throughout the USA, Canada, and Sweden, Pettersson has also been a jury member for regional and national competitions, including the Canadian Music Competition and Prix Opus, among others. He has three albums on the Axel Records label, featuring works ranging from Bach and Beethoven to Janáček and Carl Vine. Pettersson is Artistic Director of Southwest Piano Festival, a summer festival he founded in 2015, and Director of Program Development for Arizona Piano Institute. Love, Laugh, & Teach at my A+ Piano Studio My passion is not only playing the piano but teaching all ages. I've taught private and group piano lessons for over 30 years. My strength is working with the youth and helping them enjoy genres they love to listen to and play. I've taught in preschools, and in my own home (group & private), and currently teach full-time at a school. Setting up and utilizing a Piano Lab for my middle schoolers has been a dream. Christy Porter is excited to be part of your child's music training! Miss Porter grew up in Arizona and attended college at ASU where she graduated with a degree in Music Education. Miss Porter taught music for Mesa Public Schools from 1994-2007, during which time she served on the music curriculum development committee and as the organizer for the Mesa Young People's Orchestra and the Junior High Festival Orchestra. Miss Porter is currently a music teacher at Eagleridge Enrichment Center in Mesa. She performed with the Mesa Symphony for 10 years and has played with many orchestras around the valley. Ms. Lacy currently runs an online piano studio. She started playing the piano when she was 6 years old. After becoming too accomplished for her first teacher she moved on to more advanced classes and joined a piano team. She performed and competed at Northern Arizona University at the age of 17. I have been teaching piano since 1997 —and love it! I studied Music Education at MCC and piano pedagogy with Dr. Joan Woods. A Chicago native, Thomas Ridgway is a Young Steinway Artist who has been featured throughout the United States, Russia, Italy, and Austria playing solo and chamber music. In addition to having played concerti with several orchestras, he has worked with artists such as Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Emanuel Ax, and Stephen Hough and has attended notable festivals such as Pianofest in the Hamptons and the Chautauqua Institute. As an incoming doctoral student, Thomas is looking forward to coming to Arizona State University in the fall to study with Dr. Baruch Meir. Previously, Thomas attended Southern Methodist University for his Performer’s Diploma with Dr. Carol Leone. Thomas received full tuition scholarships at ASU, SMU, Northwestern University (M.M. with Alan Chow and Boris Slutsky), and Vanderbilt University (B.M. with Dr. Craig Nies) for his dedication to performance and academic achievement. When not engaged in music, Thomas enjoys taking long walks and looking at maps.

I have been teaching piano in Mesa for many years, and have played piano since I was three. I graduated from Arizona State University with a music degree, and love using what I learned to shape my students into well-rounded musicians.

As a retired elementary classroom and music teacher, I strive to offer a well-rounded, individualized music education to my students. Students have an hour lesson each week – one half hour of private instruction and one half hour of music lab time. In the lab, students utilize technology, games and a keyboard to reinforce many skills including note reading, rhythm, theory, music history, composition and improvisation. We also have group lessons four times per year. I encourage my students to be goal driven with a variety of fun music incentive programs. In addition to two studio recitals per year, I give my students the opportunity to participate in all five DVMTA events. I have been teaching piano since 1999.

Peggy Rostron is director of The Rostron Piano Studio, pianist with MusicaNova Orchestra, and freelance accompanist and soloist. She teaches all levels, ages 6 - adult. She holds 3 degrees in piano performance, including a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Iowa, and she has been active as a teacher for over 30 years, and soloist/collaborative pianist for over 40 years. She is an active member of MTNA, ASMTA and PMTA, where she serves as webmaster, and she has presented at meetings on the national, state and local levels.

A professional performer and recording artist for many years, Tim has also been providing private violin and viola instruction for over 25 years. His students are often among the top players of their school and/or community orchestras. Tim is a classically trained player and most of this students follow the same path, but he has performed in various styles over the years, from Americana to Irish to New Age, reggae and more, so he's more than willing and able to teach according to a student's desires if they prefer to delve into different genres. In the past several years, he has released several ambient/New Age CDs with keyboardist Tom Moore that have received international recognition and airplay. The latest, "Going Home", lead to the awarding of the People's Choice Award given by One World Music in the U.K., a huge honor. Tim offers lessons both in his home studio and online.

ELLEN SASSANO I received my B.S. in Music Education, piano concentration, with certification to teach grades K-12, from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA. Over the years I have publicly performed at many community and church events on the piano and organ as featured soloist, duettist, and accompanist including offering solos at church services. I am an active member of East Valley Music Teachers Association which features many student activities. I went on to study piano performance at Concordia University Irvine, CA and graduated summa cum laude in 2007. A few highlights of my musical career include studying with Dr. Kataoka & performing in the Suzuki Ten Piano Concerts in Matsumoto, Japan in 2000 and 2002, recording a CD with the Themba Choir in Dirkiesdorp, South Africa in 2009, singing with the Houston Symphony Chorus from 2011-2013, performing Bach on an all allumminum clavichord on \"The Front Row\" for Houston\'s public radio station, studying piano under Tali Morgualis at the University of Houston, accompanying the ballet studio at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, FL and playing keyboard in a 90s cover band. I currently reside in Mesa, Arizona and am a member of the MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) and Arizona Suzuki Association. I use a variety of methods to instill a love of piano and musicality in my students. I teach how to play both by ear using Suzuki books & CDs while simultaneously develop a strong grounding in theory and sight reading using the Alfred Premier books and supplemental materials. Andrea TenBarge has been teaching flute in the East Valley of Phoenix, Arizona for over 20 years. Graduating from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s in Orchestral Performance she established her roots in Phoenix and knew after working on her Master’s at Indiana University under the professorship of world renown Thomas Robertello that Arizona is where she would form her studio. Being active with the Arizona Flute Society, Andrea TenBarge often teaches masterclasses, judges for both ABODA and AFS and performs at various camps and events around the Valley. Within her large studio, Ms. TenBarge has formed and conducted regular flute choirs varying in age and levels. She has conducted Arizona’s Alla Breve choir and recently was asked to form and direct a choir of students to perform with Aralee Dorough of the Houston Symphony at Phoenix Symphony Hall for the final Gala concert of the National Flute Convention this August. She has also performed in an authentic Tango group, Che Tango, has played for the Phoenix Theater and works closely with the Higley Unified school district growing an elementary flute program helping encourage young flutists to engage, grow and flourish in their band programs. A Native Russian, Natalya Thran, received her formal music education in the former Soviet Union. She earned her Master’s degree in Music with Honors from Tashkent State Conservatory and her Master’s in Arts from the University of Nevada, Reno. Natalya came to the USA after winning a competition in the former USSR. The prize of the competition was a scholarship to study in the USA. Natalya Thran is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music by MTNA and currently serves as the President of the Arizona State Music Teachers Association. Natalya Thran is an experienced independent piano teacher of all ages and levels of students. Her students have won numerous state and local competitions in the states of Nevada and Arizona. She is a frequent adjudicator and clinician in Nevada and Arizona. Her piano duet students represented the state of Arizona in the MTNA Southwest Division Competitions. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto, and The School of Fine Arts at York University. Her teachers included Harvey Silver, Jazz pianist Alan Ray, and Earle Moss. She has studied piano pedagogy extensively, and is continually updating her teaching style in conformance with the latest research. Originally from Buffalo NY, Henry has been teaching piano for over a decade. He has experience playing with major orchestras such as the Buffalo Philharmonic. Henry first started playing the piano at the age of 3, and considers the piano to be an extension of himself. He is classically trained yet is open to any and all forms of music.

Private piano and violin lessons for all ages. (I also teach beginning cello, viola, bass, and guitar.) My studio is located at Baseline and Power Roads. In rare cases, I will come to you for an extra $60/month. Weekly lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes long (depending on skill level, age, and experience), and I give prizes, rewards, incentives for practicing and achievement (Music needs to be FUN). I have a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Arizona State University. I teach students (any and all ages) music in a way that reaches them and instills a lifelong love of music. I adapt lessons to the student's individual needs and learning styles. Working with the student, I help them understand where we're going in lessons and why we're covering the things we're covering. I help my students set goals, explaining what the goals will do for their overall playing. Learning to play music takes discipline and commitment, but it can also be fun and enjoyable and inspiring. I give prizes, rewards, and incentives for achievement (long-term and short-term) to motivate, inspire and nurture my students. I also offer lots of varied performance opportunities throughout the year to spice things up and remind them why they want to learn music. Seeing other kids doing what they do (playing the piano, etc.) always gives kids a boost of energy to keep improving. It helps them see what they could sound like in the future. Seeing their peers playing makes them want to play better. It's a very important part of learning. I also help students prepare to play at their own performance opportunities such as church functions, Regional and All-state auditions, Metropolitan Youth Symphony, East Valley Youth Symphony, Phoenix Youth Guild, Mesa Youth Orchestra, Mesa Young People's Orchestra, school orchestras, school choirs, school bands, and school jazz bands, etc. (All these activities promote learning in my studio.)I teach all aspects of music including, but not limited to, classical music training, technique, scales, chords, arpeggios, phrasing, feeling, styling, ear training, reading music, playing by ear, classical repertoire, popular repertoire, jazz, music history, music theory, how to write your own songs(composition), improvisation, sight reading, fiddling, etc.I've been teaching for 20 years, and I've been playing violin and piano since I was five years old (my mother was a piano teacher, so I grew up with music and teaching). Tuition Policy: For a 30 minute lesson once a week, it's $127.50/month, every month, regardless of how many weeks there are. Payment is due at the beginning of the month for the whole month. They want to "play" piano/violin, not "practice" piano/violin. Unfortunately, playing requires enough practice to get to the point where you can just read and play music, or just sit down and make up your own music. (Just like it takes years of learning to read and write before you can sit down and enjoy reading the Harry Potter or Twilight series.)That being said, here are things that work well for most people:Routine: If you can find a time for practicing that works on a consistent basis, this is the ideal situation. Some people practice before they go to school, some practice right when they get home from school and before homework [homework will get done no matter what because it has to, but practicing doesn't "have" to get done, so if it's the last thing of the day, most people are too tired to do it.] So in general, the earlier the better, although that's not the case for everybody. You'll have to see what works best for you. Again, I emphasize that it should NOT be the last thing you do for the day. If you're tired, and all you want to do is relax, anything you do besides relaxing is going to be un-enjoyable. And if it becomes the routine, you'll eventually start to resent practicing, not because you don't want to play/learn music, but because you're associating music with being tired and everything else that goes along with trying to wind down at the end of the day. In rare cases, I've seen the opposite be true, where practicing helps the child unwind from the day - but that is extremely rare. Environment: The ideal environment varies from person to person - some need absolute quiet and isolation, with no one else in the room to distract them. Some need the parent sitting in the same room so that they don't feel alone, or even sitting with them on the piano bench helping them practice. Others can't have their parents near them because they feel like they're being watched/controlled/judged/et cetera and it makes them anxious and resentful. Etc. Etc. The dynamics between parent/child, sibling/sibling, and student/practice are extremely varied. Just pay attention to whatever your kid is presenting, and don't hesitate to ask for suggestions. Punishment/Reward: Practicing should never be a punishment. But it can be a "chore". If you do chore charts, like cleaning your room, taking out the garbage, etc., practicing can be on the chore chart too. And then they can mark off their chores as they finish them, and if they don't get their chores done, they don't get to go play with friends, watch TV, play video games, or whatever fun thing is happening that day. On the flip side, if they do get all their chores done, they can go play with friends, or they can go play video games, or watch TV, etc. (As a side note, if there's something genuinely unique or special happening, never use "you didn't practice, so you don't get to go to this" or practicing and music will immediately and suddenly become something the kid resents.)Then, you can also have an overall reward system, like, if they do all their chores every day for the whole week, or the whole month, then they get a treat (i.e. a new piece of clothing, a new toy, a new app for their tablet, an ice cream, a trip to the movies, a play date with friends, a lunch date with a parent --- whatever will excite and motivate the individual kid.)You can also set up a point system - they get 1 point for every day they practice or 1 point for every ten minutes they practice, and then have different rewards/prizes for certain amounts of points - 300 points = xbox game, lego set, trip to Castles and Coasters, etc. Or 1 point = $1, so they can save up points and then buy whatever they want with the points they've earned - remember, 1 point can be whatever you make it - ten minutes, thirty minutes, whatever. The point system for time practiced has very tangible results - it's not an all or nothing system. Every time they practice they're earning points toward a "big" goal, like a lego set, or video game, or a sleepover, or something that they wouldn't otherwise get. And make sure that whatever system you use is only used for music, to make sure that it's a reward they wouldn't otherwise get. For some people, it helps to set a timer to let them know how long they need to sit at the piano. Or a stopwatch that will keep track of how long they practiced, then they can add that time to their points chart. I've seen parents use practicing as a way to get out of doing things the kids don't want to do, such as, "If you're practicing the piano, you don't have to be doing yard work. But as soon as you stop practicing, you're joining the rest of the family and doing yard work/housework." You'd be surprised at how much time kids can spend on the piano when it gets them out of cleaning the bathroom or doing dishes. Another straightforward way to motivate kids to practice is having them earn electronics time by practicing. So many minutes of practice equals so minutes on their electronics. With these methods, they could easily run out of things to practice and get bored, but that can be a good thing - after they've practiced their normal lesson stuff, playing around on the piano, being creative, making up songs and just seeing how different things sound can inspire them not only to grow talents they didn't even know they had but also to enjoy playing more because "playing" and "practicing" are two very different things. If all we ever get to do is the admittedly sometimes frustrating practicing stuff, it can become stale and joyless. But if you're sitting at the piano longer and just goofing around and creating stuff, that creative part of the brain gets sparked and it can reignite the passion and excitement for music. So while it is necessary to insist on proper practicing, you do also want to encourage that playful part too. A good general rule for how much a student should be practicing is this: practice five days a week, each song/scale/item three to five times each day. (Of course this varies with age and skill level. Every person is different and I will help them figure out the best ways for them to practice.) I also recommend students listen to classical music each week, and/or the CD that correlates with their music curriculum. The more they listen to (and move to) music, the better. You can set up a similar reward system for listening to classical music too. Or just put it on while you're driving around in the car, while they're doing homework, etc. (Listening to classical music has a ton of benefits aside from helping them to learn music better and faster - just google it and you'll find tons of data on this.) Hope this helps!  Details of Tuition Policy: Some months there are 5 weeks, some there are 4 weeks, some there are 3 weeks. Over time, it all balances out. My basic rate is $60/hour, or $30/half hour. There are 52 weeks in a year, minus one week for the week of Christmas equals 51 weeks. 51 weeks x $30/half hour lesson = $1530/year. $1530 divided by 12 months = $127.50/month. So, it's $127.50/month for a half-hour lesson once a week, regardless of how many weeks there are in a month, including one week off for Christmas. For vacations/missed classes/illnesses/makeups: If you know you'll miss a scheduled lesson for a valid reason (i.e. family vacation, school concert, illness, etc.), let me know as far in advance as possible. If you let me know in advance, then I will do my best to reschedule that lesson. If you no-call/no-show, you forfeit that lesson and its payment, and do not get a makeup lesson or a refund. If the student is sick, and you call to let me know, I will do my best to schedule a makeup. If you no-call/no-show for any reason, you forfeit that lesson and its payment.  During the summer, we can schedule double lessons on the weeks you're here to makeup for the weeks you're gone, or have two lessons in one week - the second lesson turns into a "how to practice" session, which is always very beneficial. If I could have two or more days every week with my students it would be amazing! They would excel so fast. But that's not usually possible, so the weeks where we do a makeup and have two classes are very valuable. As a side note, I do have students that I see multiple times every week and they move at a much faster pace, so if you're interested in that let me know. I love teaching piano and have been doing it for over 30 years. I try to keep learning fun, up-beat and positive while teaching scales, theory, composition, note-reading and other important fundamentals. I provide several performing opportunities such as recitals, competitions, duet ensembles and so on. Many of these opportunities are sponsored through Desert Valley Music Teachers' Association of which I have been a member for over 30 years. I have served on the board of this great organization in various capacities for many years. I love the growth that I have seen in my students as well as in my teaching because of our participation in DVMTA.

I received my master's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1986 and my bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. My first experience in teaching piano students began in 1983. I was also fortunate to be awarded a teaching assistantship in group piano during my study at the University of Illinois. In addition to teaching group piano to college music majors, part of the teaching assistantship involved giving private lessons to children and adults. After receiving my master's degree, I taught students part time until 1993 when teaching became my fulltime career.

Dr. Jessica Yam received her education from New England Conservatory, Eastman School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Arizona State University.  She has a particular affinity for Chopin and was one of two national recipients of the Chopin Foundation of the United States Scholarship in the early 2000s.  Her teaching is primarily based on the Russian school, which has been fundamental in her training, and she has taught for over 15 years.  In addition to instructing preparatory level students, she teaches at ASU and has also taught as piano professor at Southwestern College.  She currently serves on the ASMTA Board of Directors and is the chairman of the 2016 ASMTA Conference.  

Graduated from SUNY at Buffalo with two master's degrees in music: piano solo performance, and chamber music and piano accompaniment. More than 30 years of piano teaching experiences.
